This is Randy Carter’s former GTS 5-speed.

It was a good car when I discovered the engine swap in late 2023. Probably still is. Maybe slightly better.

The reason I began looking very carefully was that it drove too well to be a GTS engine unless the engine had been already out once.

If you are looking for a 5-speed to drive then look at this one. @linderpat ?

But, it won’t be an investment.

The story in the first comment has some … interpretational variances … shall we say...that go along with some “disappeared” records. But they do not affect the GTS functionally. I’ll fill in a buyer on ‘the rest of the story

It is definitely a driver. Something that can be enjoyed. It is also the second-best kind of GTS: one with oil drain holes for the oil rings. (The best kind of GTS is one with oil-drain holes drilled in GTS pistons.)

Where do you see this? It wasn’t in the records and the paint wasn’t perfect when I inspected it.

BaT listing doesn’t say it either?

Just caught up on BaT auction comments.

Speculation that this had an S4 motor in it from the factory is interesting but irrelevant.

The motor in that GTS is from a ‘90 Automatic based upon serial number.

Also, the records (that apparently disappeared) show an attempt to weld the block along with parts replacements consistent with a heavy bottoming out of the front end. And thus, we know that the welding was to the corner for the alternator.

The block in the GTS was perfect and showed no signs of welding anywhere.

I don't know about any repaint, but in the seller's long introduction, "detailed completely" (challenged in a subsequent comment) and re-dying is mentioned:

Once the car was in my posession, it was carefully detailed completely. Minor fixes and reconditioning was carried out including touching up and re-dying the leather on the front seats, steering wheel and shift knob.

I'm good. I've got my 85 5 speed driver. I do like this one though. I also see Randy V's old GTS is for sale on ebay. It has a GB srtoker in it.

m’kay. Seemed like you were interested in that last one. That’s why I asked.

I don't like that it is being marketed with 29k miles. The fine print does say 271k miles

I ‘spect that’ll get corrected by one of the West Coast folks.

When I first saw it I read 290000 miles then checked the actual number of zeros.

Betcha this is BaT’s mistake. Data entry minion probably couldn’t wrap their brain around 290,000 miles.

Oh… ebay… forgot that that existed as a place to look for 928s :lol2:

So, yeah, you’re right. Irksome then. Some might claim bait and switch.

Their angle is that the stroker has only 29K miles on it. However, the engine (as we all know) is only one part of the total system. I would imagine at that mileage every bushing and electrical component needs an overhaul, plus other plastic bits and so on.

You would imagine correctly. But mileage is only a part of the story. Time, heat cycles, and moisture cycles too.

This car sold for more than I thought it would ($81,500). I suppose the lack of an original engine didn't hold it back too much. That said, Horizon Blue over blue Sports seats + manual probably played a factor as well.

I suspect, but don’t know, and won’t ask…

… that the owner who bought it last year, brought it to me for PPI, and then unwound the sale…

… might have regrets now.
