Really Tempting, But......

Hi,

I have a friend about to get his GT3 RS, arriving in September. He will sell his 2022 718 GT4, 6-speed manual, to make room. Light option car except for the full bucket seats. Chalk exterior (I love that color), with factory, Satan black wheels. Black interior.

7,500 miles and never tracked. He ordered the car with the intention to track etc. But he had to wait 1 year for an allocation, then COVID hit. And wife delivered him a daughter the week the car arrived. So he never did track the 718 GT4. He swears he will track the GT3.

I can get first dib if I am interested. But.....

(1) At age 75, ingress/egress may be an issue.
(2) Not going to track or auto-cross this car. Not at my age now.
(3) Hopefully not to old to loose my fire to drive local winding roads.
(4) Wife will never get into the GT4 with me. But we can still go places in the SL that she loves.
(5) I actually still have my 2007 Cayman sitting in my daughter's garage.
(6) I only have a 2-car garage. The Sorento will have to live outside if I pick this one up.
(7) The 718s have tall gears, most likely I don't even need third gear (or higher) much, even on freeways.
(8) We have all the cars we need with the Sorento and the SL. But a 718 GT4 manual??? :eyepop: :eyepop:

OTOH....
(1) It is a car in high demand: manual and full buckets. I can enjoy it for a few years and still sell it readily. In fact, a local exotic car dealer told me they'll gladly buy it anytime as they know they can sell it in a heartbeat. Factory warranty expires in October 25, 2025. I will add an extended warranty if I buy it. Peace of mind for myself, and future owner if I sell.
(2) The 718 GT4 and the 2007 Cayman are actually totally different cars. Can't really compare the fun-to-drive factor between the two.
(3) You only live once, this is perhaps the epitome of Porsche performance, short of the RS versions (718 and 911 GT3s) for another $80k+ more. Just owning one would be a privilege.
(4) Four liter (6-cylinders) + 9,000 red line, mid-engine sound. That's heaven right there. The lesser versions are 4-cylinders with turbos. :nono: :nono:

I have 5-6 weeks before he is ready to sell. Time to ponder this one.

Advice anyone?

Based on your specific scenario you're probably better suited for a GTS instead of a GT4.

But with that being said you're talking about a high demand vehicle (although still not as high demand as a GT4 RS) that should hold its value pretty well. Plus you'll get to experience something very different than your current Cayman that should be quite a blast in the mountain roads close to home.

You probably wouldn't use it much but if the cost of ownership is close to zero after selling it, then it might be worth the gamble. Let us know how it turns out!

Hmmmm CP. I agree with Fernando, if you're going to do it, do a 4.0L model.

4.0s are what everyone wants before ICE dies. 718 production stops this October. 4.0s are a sellers market.

Alternatively,

There are a bunch of 718 2.0 (Base) models on the ground at fire sale prices. 300 hp in a car that weighs ~3100 pounds.

Super fun and you can ring it out even goin’round town. Same thing in a 4.0 is jail territory.

Sounds like Poo to those inculcated in flat-6 religion.

But ~1/2 price of a 4.0.

FYI.

I checked into the GTS, the main difference is red line RPM. GTS:7,800. GT4: 9,000.

The GTS is also 1"+ taller and that affects the cornering feel quite a bit. It is a great touring car. The GT4 RS is the ultimate track appliance, and the GTS is the ultimate cruiser. The GT4 is somewhat in between.

Our Godson, who is close friend with the GT3 RS owner, just got his 718 GT4 RS. They are going to track these two cars together.

I was not looking to add a car, thus I never hunted for a 718 GTS. But this is an one-owner, pristine, well-pampered car (PPF and ceramic coating already installed) that could fall on my lap with zero efforts to hunt. Perhaps at a reasonable no-haggle price. As Fernando said: the car will hold it's value, so it could be a relatively cost-free enjoyment for a few years.

I think I should at least give this some thought.

Only the gt4 rs has the 9000rpm gt3 engine. This has the same 4L as the GTS. Buy it anyway.

GT4 4.0 is not a GT3 4.0, totally different engines with the GT4 redline at 8k rpm instead of 9k. It’s a decent motor, bored out from the 3.0 turbo motors. That said, once you’ve experienced a GT3 4.0, the GT4 engine will feel a little lazy particularly coupled with the long gearing. Ride on GT4s is pretty stiff. I suggest you drive it before you commit. If I was looking for a canyon carving tool, the GT4 would not be high on my list.

My mistake. 718 GT4 RS is 9k red line. The GT4 is much lower at 8k RPM.

Thanks for the catch/correction.

Hi,

This is the beauty (718 GT4) I alluded to in this thread.

https://finder.porsche.com/us/en-US/det ... ned-08V3ZD

I had a chance to get that at roughly $110k. I passed as it is not the right car for me at this stage of my life. Also not the right car for Bay Area roads, traffic and speed limits. If I track, I'd have jumped on this with both feet. But those days are long gone. :gaywave: :gaywave:

Now a local dealer has it listed for about $150k. Four years old and 8150 miles. Amazing. :eyepop: :eyepop:

On a side note, I am extremely happy with the BRZ. Really perfect for my use case today.

Gorgeous car but what a price!

To think that was 911 pricing territory just a few years ago..wow!
