New solution for Oil Cooler block fittings

On Rennlist there have been numerous threads about the oil fittings that screw into the block and the problems they cause when they break loose. Part of the problem is that the wrench boss is too narrow to get a wrench on them to counter hold and when people yank on the oil line to loosen it the fitting breaks loose from the block.

Below on the left is the original fitting that was on my 86 block. You can't get a wrench on it. In the middle is Porsche's current replacement version. Even thinner and you obviously can't get a wrench on it. On the right is my new design.

I had one of the factory fittings hardness tested and chemical tested @ a local lab so that I know what material to make the fittings out of. This alone cost over $700.

In addition to the new fittings I'll be also selling a wider sealing ring to help repair the damaged threads and helping in adding a cleaner installation.

The overall solution is to JB weld the fittings to the block, and if you go that route being able to counter hold them is still a good idea when loosening the oil lines. (I actually had both of mine break loose after JB welding them in. It is very difficult to get the threads perfectly clean with what ever solvent you use.

Depending on where you search, the Porsche fittings sell for $25-$30 each online. I have this initial batch priced @ $60 per set plus shipping. They should be ready for shipment starting on the 20th.

I noticed this is the second cool product you have rolled out.

Things are going fast and furious. I'm sold out of the cam tools until I can get the next batch which will be in March. (90% of the cam tool sales have been to 944 guys on Facebook) I'm down to my last 2 sets on these and looks like Worf is getting both sets. Shopify shut my store down due to the volume of new orders in a short period of time, so I'm scrambling to get another shopping cart app going this week. Just got my sales tax permit in the mail yesterday. I have a couple more good releases coming up with a really big one in April. That one is gonna knock everyone on their butt... including me.

I've got 11 products currently planned, one of them I've been working on for over 6 months and should be the big April release. I'm shooting for one release or more per month.

I currently have a business page of Facebook under 928 Innovations as well as getting an eBay store setup.

If things really take off I'll be selling thru Roger.

On Monday I'm picking up 5 sets of the Oil Cooler brackets and 5 of the oil cooler fan shrouds, as well as 3 radiator fan shrouds.

I've only got 2 sets left of this 1st batch. If anyone bails on their order then I can get you as much as I have cancellations for. I shop in the UK bought 10 sets, and another shop bought 8 sets.

I thought my cam tool inventory would be enough for the year but I sold both batches in 3 days, and part of the March batch is already sold as well.

How bad are the threads in tbe block?

If they are good enough to hold normal tightening, I wonder if gel type Tread locker/sealant red might be better than JB weld.

You would have to get the threads really clean.

Either way it's best to be able to counter hold when loosening the oil lines as they need to be pretty damn tight to keep from leaking and you cant do that with the factory fittings.

Not arguing that. Just thinking if it comes loose, a second repair after thread locker is easier than trying to clean up JB weld.

the threads are usually good, what happens is that part of the last thread breaks off, and takes a chunk of the sealing surface with it. Others have tried the gel thread sealant and had to go back in with JB weld because of the thicker consistency. Personally I cringed when I 1st read about using JB weld but quite a few people weighed in that is what they were doing. This is where my wider sealing rings come into play & that is another discussion. lol

No no: I meant the oil cooler hose adapters. You know… the stuff in *this* thread.

I have the factory WSM cam tools. For 20-ish years.

Why would I need more than one set of cam tools assuming I needed any?

yep only 2 sets left of the oil cooler hose fittings. I'll let you know when they arrive. I only mentioned the cam tools as Crumpler mentioned my other thread

I learned a valuable lesson this week. Don't post about stuff until it's in your hands. Plater screwed up the cam tools, and anodized them blue instead of hard black and those are getting re done & I got shorted on my oil fittings. The next batch of oil fittings is on order & at least a month out.

Sterling, I will take two sets if you have any left in a month, after you fulfill everyone's orders ahead of me.
