If you've got an IMI starter I'd recommend looking at the tooth engagement. This was mine out of the box:

And this is after spending 2 hours modifying the mounting plate that came on the starter.

I spent endless hours with IMA 15 years ago to make it. The guy I worked with left, and after that they didn't care. Close enough was good enough for them. The mounting plate for the starter has a raised ring of metal to center the starter. on the side that kept the teeth on the bendix aligned with the flywheel, I shaved off some metal to allow the teeth to get closer to the flywheel. I then ovaled out one of the bolt holes which allowed the starter to pivot closer to the flywheel.
