I have an apron-less '89 in the shop.

But, what the hell is that?

I see it in the parts diagram.

it just a big chunk of rubber, i think it should be stuck to the bumper, to give it more rigidity, remains of old glue can be seen on it, but cannot remember where
there might be a square casting in the bumper to show the guys on the production line where to stick it but that's just a hopeful guess.

It is stuck to the plastic apron? Or the bumper?

i would call the plastic apron, part with the lights in, the bumper.
i thought the curvature of it might match the curve of the bumper

The apron/bumperless S4 in the shop was hit in the left-rear many years ago. That part is long gone and wasn’t glued to the apron. Although there might be a ‘dirt line’ where it was once.

i need to get a rear bumper and alloy beam out of storage and see if i find where it looks like they have been fitted, will post a picture if i find anything.

many thanks for taking the picture, just what i am looking for
will borrow it and use it as a " for illustration purposes only " picture when i list them on ebay
many will have been removed over the years, or fallen off if the bumper has been removed as they are just glued / taped in position.
