A little tricky to remove or just me?

It took a pretty big gear puller and lots of heat.

Original to car (MY 86).
Alloy. Not sure when steel versions superseded.

I was afraid I was going to crack it. No damage seen.

Steel version after '91. How *long* after (i.e. '93, '92, ...) I don't recall.

With nut off, gear usually comes out pretty easily.

Patience, penetrant, perseverance. And heat.

No patience.
I only do immediate gratification.
But I did take your advice on main seal and pump!

What are you using for penetrant?

Try 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF.

At how many miles and years did you make this observation?

The alloy gears wore out in ~30k miles and would, I think, have been replaced with the steel version if the belt was done after 92/93.

'95s definitely had the steel gear as OE.

I seem to recall my '91 had the alloy gear, but it's been so long since I did its first belt I'd need to dig out the parts invoice. And after 75-ish t-belt R&Rs my memory is subject to error.

I purchased my 928 in 97 and it was 7 years old with 38K on the clock and was parked for 3-4 years before I acquired it. I got all of the maintenance records. No record of a timing belt or any maintenance other than oil and other fluid changes as well as a set of tires replaced. It was flat bedded to my shop and I personally did the timing belt as I was part owner of the shop and my partner had trained at Porsche in Germany. He worked for AMG building engines before moving to Porsche late 70's. He moved to DFW in the late 80's and started his own shop which I became a part owner of in the mid 90's. I know the gear was steel, as I stuck it to a magnet and it was on the side of my toolbox until 2021 when I moved to our current house. I purchased a one for grins when I built my 1st stroker engine.

Well, that's the nail in that coffin.

If I do upgrade to steel, I remember something about washer behind gear is then deleted.
Fact or fiction?

Just checking on what’s normal here.
The block has an irregular edge hole behind the oil pump.
I can’t discern if some flaking defect or previous abuse by someone, or standard issue?

Pump itself appears fine at that location. No leaks noted.

Yours looks like all the others.

The split between the cylinder block and the girdle goes right through the oil pump. It always looks a bit shitty.

Here, two different 928 engines:

Thank you.

I found this image this morning too.
Just irregular enough to make me pucker last night.
