I don't know if it's now common knowledge or not, but MSDS is no longer in business, they closed up shop in May, no longer manufacturing, and have retired.

They do not answer or return phone calls.
They DO answer emails.

If you're in the market or think you might be at some point, for a set of headers I would encourage you to email them for the remaining inventory they might have.

I'm not aware of any other "affordable" headers for our cars, so once these are gone they're gone.

Talked with Marty from MSDS today about the current remaining stock levels of all the 928 headers that they offer.

As of 11/4/2025, there are:
10 sets left of each of the early 78-85 2 bolt flanges
10 sets of the intermediate 85.5 year ones (2 bolt?)
10 sets of the 86-94 3 bolt style 32V flanges

Once they're gone, they're gone. They have halted production and have no intention of resuming.

I have a vague memory on the other channel that factory S3 exhaust manifolds were “good” or “better” then other years for performance, and MSDS was a lateral move at least for the 86.
Did I make that up in a fever dream?
Does anyone have an opinion on the 20percent hp gains they talk of on the website?

I almost don't care about HP gains from headers IF dropping the clutch requires removal of the headers.

And so far, I haven't seen a set of 928 headers that will allow the clutch assembly to clear.

I would rather shave my scrotum with a cheese grater than R&R headers so that I can R&R a clutch (or check crank endplay on an auto.) And I don't care that I'd be getting paid by the hour to do it.

As for the original question, with Shark-tuning maybe some gains from headers.

Without? You'd better have SAE-corrected dyno runs on the same dyno. And 3 runs for each configuration to convince me...

Yes.

The email ([email protected]) is what I used, so yes consistent with the website contact email.

The pricing I was given for my '82 set was the same as listed on the website, at $733 for the HO-928 set, plus shipping.

Fair argument concerning the clutch, but how often is that really happening.

I should be able to asses the HP claims as I have a baseline dyno plot for my car, with stock management ('82 L-Jet)
Some old posts on the other site claim that with a few degrees of added timing, the cars do respond well to the headers on early 4.5/4.7L 16V's

I had a requirement when I was reshaping the 928 intl race headers that I must be able to get the lower bellhousing off, as well as get the clutch and flywheel out with the headers and exhaust in tact. it was a chore to do so but it's really a nice feature.

I would be interested in knowing who reshaped them for you (if it wasn't you). I have some headers I am interested in "reshaping" (or having a set made).

I cut off the headers at the secondaires and reshaped from there to the collectors and moved the collectors in board to tuck in around the bell housing but left enough room to be able to remove the lower bell housing and flywheel along with the intermediate plate.

Any chance you can post a picture if you still have the setup?

I had mentioned to MSDS that I may very likely be changing out the collectors. They were less than enthusiastic hearing about that before I'd even seen the headers first-hand, which I guess is fair. Regardless, I'll likely be replacing the flanges with V-bands, more inline with how I've built all my headers in the past.
