So while I send my blue seats out to be totally rebuilt I bought a pair of good condition black seats for my 86 928S. They don't have any rips or tears in the leather (nice) however the stitching on the head pillows is missing on one side of each of the seats. I'm guessing the thread broke as the holes look fine.

Anyone ever re-stitched these, and if so what kind of needle and thread did you use? Any tips/thoughts on fixing them?

That's way beyond my pay grade; I'd just hand it off to the local upholstery shop. However, I did a steering wheel awhile back, and it too is thick leather. The key there was making sure you have the correct needles for the job. Leather needles with curves in them. Also, the holes were re-used. Not sure if this would apply to the headrest.

It can be done, but probably not with the leather on the seat backrest. You can remove the leather by removing the center padded section (held on with hog rings, then removing all the 'stuff' that holds the remaining backrest leather on the seat. NOT an easy job, but can be done. Then, turn it inside-out to hand sew the section you are referring to in your post.

Reinstall everything, and you'll be able to use the seat again. I recommend living with it until your get your OE refinished seats back!!!!

Mmmm. Sounds like a complex job. I'll get a set of $100 seat covers for now (heck I can get blue) which will hold me.

Oddly enough the project is on hold for a bit: My kid got a job as a school photographer and since their electric truck doesn't have enough range they're using the 928S as a cargo carrier. Which I'm not going to put nice seats in there for them to just trash up.
