My nieces boyfriend/partner managed to let the timing belt shread on his 2012 mini.

Supposedly the car is otherwise is in great shape.

Anyone have any experience as to how to not lose all the value.

@XR4Tim What would a used Mini engine insaltall typically cost?

Wow crazy timing as I was about to post something about how much fun my daughter's 2015 Mini Cooper S is to drive.

She had a rear wheel bearing that was going bad so instead of having an indy charge her almost $500 to fix it, we did it in my dad's driveway for less than $100 and in about 20 minutes.

But driving the car this morning was a treat as that little car is a go-kart. It's not as fast as my P-cars but for some reasons feels fast. Strangest sensation but I really like that thing for some reason!

Well, the Mini is coming to the shop, at least as a temporary resting place because it has to leave the house they are moving out of, and there is no room at the house that they are buying.

Going to check a few indi shops and see what a junkyard engine swap will cost.

Car-part.com. You got a lift. I put a clutch in my 05 and it wasn't that bad. I can't imagine a engine swap would be that much worse.

Videos show removing most of the front of the car, with notes about some typically difficult items.

Looked at car-part and Ebay, but 2012 sees to be a split model year, so i need to do more research after I get my hands on thr car.

The owner is not as technical as he thinks he is.

Mini model years and chassis generations are a mess when you're looking for parts.

Each and every time I try to get stuff for my daughter's car I'll end up with the wrong part because they had transitioned to a new body style that year. Very frustrating!

I don't have a labor guide handy, but I would imagine replacing the engine with a complete used unit would be in the 15 hour range. My guess is that the whole assembly would drop out the bottom with the subframe. I did a clutch on a friend's 2002 Cooper S once, and it was a challenge (without a transmission jack, and without dropping the subframe).

When I did the clutch on my 05, I dropped the subframe. I also did bushings power steering hoses, and other things. It became a slippery slope. Of course anytime I had to work on that thing you had to put it into service mode which included pulling the nose forward a few inches.

Service position is sn old Audi trick.
Made a lot of jobs easier, once you learned how to do it.

So, the saga continues.
Got the dealers estimate where he first had the car towed.

It is the serpentine belt, not timing. He fancies himself mechanically intelligent, but i guess not.
Belt got caught in the front main-seal, but a video makes that look like not to bad a job once you are doing the belt. Also the water pump pulley is recommended to be replaced. Looks easy also.
Mention of an oil leak fron the filter mount, and one from the pan. Said "oil pan removal to remove shredded belt. (That makes very little sense.)
One axle due to torn boot.
A couple of marker bulbs at ridiculous prices.
And $175 to change the brake fluid. ( given the other prices, that was the bargain)

Well, no good deed goes unpunished, so i guess i have a weekend or two of work to do.

Well, the Mini is here.
Will be a few weeks before I have time to start digging in to it.

It is in decent shape, but not perfect.
Engine compartment was very dirty, and it wouldn't start, but no telling why yet.
