Open Road

Not sure if we're going to make this a permanent feature but I wanted to gauge if there was any interest...

I've deployed a chat room function for us to test and see if it's worth implementing:

I figured this might spark some interest during debates or other events where virtual drinking games might be a bit entertaining. Since this is just a test instance we are unfortunately limited to 5 users at a time but if it is a hit then I'll subscribe to it and make part of the site permanently.

WE CAN NOW SUPPORT 50 USERS AT ONCE - TIME TO PARTY!!!!

Let me know your thoughts and if you see any issues with it.

Note - only registered users can get in. Conversations are not public and can only be viewed by those with access.

so will there be any notification when a new response is added to the chat room if not in the room? @FPENA944 also more room at the table please

Will it be like Facebook (don't have) where we can post what we are having for lunch?
Like, I'm currently waiting for a flight in Denver, not sure what to eat...

Not yet as I was just testing it. But I'll add it in shortly!

OK added to the menu. Since we're running short on space on the forum menu you first have to click on "Community" and then you'll see it there.

Thanks for calling out that error.

It's actually not related to the chat platform but something else I'm digging deeper into now.

Error was my developer dude migrating code to the Production site. I'm having him remove it all right now so the error should be fixed shortly. Everything in the "Community" section is affected but not the forums.

I keep getting the error message "This chat room is for private users only"

Just tried again this morning and getting same message.

Just tested on different browsers and different accounts and I was able to access without incident.

Can you all try again? But instead of going directly to the link, click on "Community" then select "Chat Room"

This is actually going to have to be done for a lot of you because of the way the site is set up. Your credentials don't move over until you access one of the Community site pages first. Then once that is done you are now part of the "Community" and can go directly in from this point forward. But as of right now both @graham_mitchell and @Bart aren't seen as users because you've not accessed any Community pages yet.

If you still have issues after doing all of this let me know.

For those on mobile having the strange issue where the default text is remaining in place and not being overwritten. Can you tell me which device and browser you are using? I'm not seeing it on Android with Chrome or Edge or my Apple iOS emulator, but will test using whatever configuration you're using to troubleshoot.

Also for all others, I turned off history on it so you'll only see dialog when you're actually logged in. This will prevent you from seeing any conversation that took place when you were not actively logged in. I figure it's better that way so we don't have everything we say stored indefinitely!

Doesn't appear to work for me, at least with the "Elegance" profile selected. If I click chat room then it takes me to that page, but says for Private uses only. Then I click "Sign In" in the corner and it just takes me back to the Open Road forum home page already signed in. Then I try and go back to the chat again and it says for Private users only, still asking to Sign in.

I'm able to post in this thread, but there are no drop downs under "Community"

Yeah there aren't any drop-downs as it'll take you to a screen that has a menu bar like the following. From here is where you can select "Chat Room":

Usually when it happens it's a cookie issue but now that the connection is established hopefully it remains constant from this point forward.

Just curious, why the change from logging in to the chat and not seeing previous posts? Only what you see from the time you log in?

From what I can see it does capture and display at least a few hours worth of conversation when you log in. Or it might just be because I stay on virtually all day.

I can easily enable it again but there were some concerns about archiving the conversation that takes place there.

If most of you are ok with the dialog there being stored then I'll re-enable. But remember that unlike the forum where it's stored on a private server, this application does run on the cloud. Granted it's all encrypted and secure but is not stored on the same server that runs this site.

Understandable. Was looking forward to seeing what peeps had to say about the debate since I didn't watch it. No big deal really.
