anybody in the UK have any old / rusty / warped etc GTS brake disc's for sale ?
never going back on a 928, just need some for a summer project
i think i have everything else i am going to need and don't fancy buying new as i would not make any money selling the finished article
cheers

could not find any old GTS brake discs, so i contacted my very helpful local OPC to ask if they had any old brake discs.
the GTS discs are 322mm in dia
went down today and collected an old pair of 330mm dia discs + a pair of 390mm dia discs
would prefer to use the 330 as they look like 928 discs, but need to build it to see if its stable enough, so might need the bigger ones.
should get it built in the next few weeks.
cheers

finally got it planned out in my mind, just need to build it.
just a mock up below, will get welded and painted when i am happy with it.
starting with a large used Porsche disc from my very helpful local OPC South Lakes .
forgot to ask which model, but its 15.5" dia so big and heavy enough
20250610_071623.jpg
then added a "closer looking to a 928 GTS brake disc" also supplied by local OPC
at least its a 5x130 stud pattern and a smaller hole in the middle than the bottom one and then had to cut a groove in it
20250610_071653.jpg
20250610_071708.jpg
20250610_071712.jpg
cut the mountings off a front shock lower mount and it now fits in the middle of it all
20250610_071743.jpg
then a front shock
20250610_071844.jpg
more to follow

my first mockup was short of height so am using a rear spring on the front shock
had to grind off the alloy spring perch and slightly enlarge the middle of a rear spring lower mount, but they now mate together.
20250610_071856.jpg
20250610_071909.jpg
now a rear spring fits on a front shock
20250610_071953.jpg
i have a sleeve and some M12 rod so getting the bodyshop to weld that onto the shock shaft to make up the extra height of the spring.
it will have very little tension on it, i just need enough to keep the spring held in the cups and give a little side to side stability.
should get that done this weekend.
then a plate on the shock top to mount, a generic seat to sit on and should have the very basic start a 928 bar stool.
will need foot rest and more stability at the lower mount, but thats in the coming weeks
can't wait to test it with a warm beer
cheers
Phil

Do any of us have to say what the seat pattern should be?

that's a very good point, if they go into production, the customer can choose
i was going to just use this one pictured, as it has a flat base that is just bolted on.
but i might ask a price from local upholsterer who did my jack bags to see how much in can can red
cheers

I was picturing a non-backed, plain bar stool, like this one... and a Pascha / Pasha pattern.

getting there slowly, got the extra rod welded to the shock absorber and mounted the dust cover so as to cover the weld.
pictures are at the very rough "just make it fit to see if its going to work" stage
20250628_100829.jpg
20250628_100946.jpg
20250628_101159.jpg
then had to modify the top mount of a front shock, remove rubber and turn it upside down, then i will have a flat surface to mount a steel plate to
20250628_103818.jpg
20250628_103825.jpg
20250628_103842.jpg[/attachment)
then fit a rear shock top cup to center the spring, then fit the front shock top to it, middle nut is just there to hold it together, metal plate will be on top of this secured buy the 3 mounting nuts + shock top nut
then drill holes in plate and mount the seat to it
piece of white plastic should be the size of the metal plate

20250628_104201.jpg
20250628_104216.jpg
20250628_104823.jpg
need to straighten the lower mount and wait for the metal plate to turn up, so will fit it all together in a couple of weeks
20250628_104604.jpg
pictures don't quite match the description but this ffing forum times out in about 10 mins so half way through this posti have have to log back in, ffing crap.
cheers

finally got some 3mm thick plate cut to shape
drilled holes in it for the shock top
nuts tightened and studs cut flush with the nuts
20250706_074135.jpg
20250706_074224.jpg
20250706_080238.jpg
then drilled and mounted plate to seat.
drilled pilot holes in the seat base.
remove plate from seat and used a hole cutter to make the holes large enough to take the nuts.
so the shock top, plate and seat all fit tight together

but looks and certainly feels like overkill with 2 brake discs at the base.
so went with one but the hole is to big
so cut the center out of an S4 brake disc
still needs a lot of grinding to make it flat
and after a little drilling i will be using 3 wheel studs and nuts to hold it all clamped together

20250706_095041.jpg
20250706_100744.jpg
20250706_101402.jpg
20250706_102436.jpg
looks better with one disc
20250706_102500.jpg
still needs a lot of fine tuning to get it all straight and square and the optimum height
foot rest is hopefully going to be a steering wheel
and will need to make some supports at 180 degrees from the bottom mount, might use some rear ARB drop links.
then paint shock red, powder coat spring black and the rest in silver
cheers
Phil

Have you sat in it to test stability?

no have not sat on it yet, need to get the base secure and brace it, but fingers crossed will try it in a couple of weeks.
and if it holds me up then will test with a warm beer
cheers

Not worried about it holding weight, but drop a weight from tbe back of the seat and see where it hits the ground.
It looks like the back edge of the rotor might not be far enough back.
You might need to add a wheelie bar.

nothing is straight or square yet, will still need a lot of fine tuning before the final weld / bolt together

finally got the base of it all sorted, its only the base brake disc that is not from a 928, still need to ask the local OPC what it came off.
wheel studs and nuts hold it together + i fully threaded the front mounting stud of the lower shock mount, so that makes 3 mounting points.
even tapped the disc so could screw the disc mounting screw into it
will get the brake disc center and shock mounting welded on the under side, but there is no flex in anything as it is now
rear ARB links had to be cut to the angle of the disc.
but have test sat on it and it is solid and does not move.
still need to find a steering wheel for the foot rest, tighten the spring so its a couple of inches lower, final fine tune, then off to paint
cheers

could not find a cheap steering wheel so using the one out of the 87 i just broke
need to remove the mounting part with the splines in it + a lot of the foam, then might be able to screw it up the coils of the spring and weld it on a few coils up for the foot rest, fingers crossed.
this weeks job
cheers

finally finished, just the steering wheel to weld or clamp with small U clamps + correct 928 nuts and bolts but really happy with it now.
still need to get the seat recovered, think i will see if i can get black leather with red piping
off to paint, so should be fully finished in a few weeks time.

That is looking great!
Might not be feasible, but the 928 rear seats have a unique shape and are about the correct size for that style bar stool. The shape of the foldable top portion comes from a very stout piece of wood to which the folding mechanism and upholstery all attach to. It would be cool if you could create a seat that mimics that shape. Adding Porsche upholstery would also be gravy. Maybe for version N?

thanks for the suggestion Herman, i will see if i can make another one using that idea in the future.
once this one is painted and finished, next project using spare 928 parts that are of no use second hand is going to be......
or if i can find an interesting 928 for restoration and not for breaking
cheers

finally all finished
base painted with silver brake caliper paint, i left the vented part of the disc unpainted, looks more authentic and saves the paint getting chipped off.
a std shock painted sports red
spring has been powder coated and everything else just the usual brake caliper black spray paint
steering wheel now fully clamped to the spring with U clamps and managed to refit the leather i had removed from it to help cover them up.
think i can get one of the young ladies out of the office to test it, high heels on a 928 steering wheel -
cheers

still i have picture proof of heels on a 928 steering wheel, another tick off the bucket list
cheers
