i might be thick but how does the float make any form of contact if there is a rubber ring at both ends of it slide?
how does it open or close the circuit ?
wire pictured should go up the middle of the float shaft.

Reed switch inside the shaft and magnet in the float.

thought i would see if i could put a new reed switch in.
not a good idea using a finger as a make shift solder sucker though...

got the new reed switch soldered to the top of the housing, but then found the reed part to long so the magnet float is opening it in any position.
need to find a very short reed switch.
a future project.
cheers
