Would be a tough choice between this and a CGT.
Not really, the 959 bid says "BID TO $810,000 ON 9/28/16"
so its an old auction that never got sold

Wrong auction. It's this one: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1987- ... 9-komfort/.

I'm not sure which one I'd pick. Both the greatest P-cars ever made to my liking. I'd probably give a nod to the CGT.

The link above was to an old auction but there is a red 959 Komfort currently being auctioned. Currently at $1.859,959.

I guess its time to sell the house and cash out the 401K plan then.

Not BAT, but would make a very nice drop into a 928 or something else interesting...or for the price a nice man cave display...

yeah, that one was a shocker. I always follow the go carts and mini bikes, thinking to make a grab for my grandson at some point. Not that one, that's for sure.

Crazy right? My brother and I bought an Ala Kart from a guy down the hill from us for 50 bucks in maybe 70'. Pennies were part of the transaction. We also had a pretty much endless supply of West Bend motors from the bone pile at my dad's business. They used the same motor on jumping jack compactors (one legged ass kickers) and the mechanics would just install new motors instead of spending the time to repair them.

I also have a 69 Z-50a that I need to do something with.

I've gotten the 356 speedster bug again. The real thing is above my budget, so I thought a replica would be the way to go.
I've been watching the BAT auctions for replicas, wow, the prices for a replica are skyrocketing.
No surprise I guess when you see a dealer buy one on BAT at 43K and then put on his web site the next day for 78K.

Once you get into 50K territory I start looking at used Caymans and even 911s and wonder why I would want a 356 replica over a real modern Porsche.
Once again my logical brain stops my fun impulse purchases in its tracks.

Or maybe a nice real 356 fixer upper for $60K

All depends if you're going to drive it or just collect it. Regardless of what they can do on the street or track, there are far fewer purple 968s with 8K miles on them than there are 997.2 GT3s. This one wasn't bought to drive.

Here's one one of the comments from the listing:
This sold for $65k two years ago, which means at this price its been appreciating over $3.5k a month on average since then or an 130% increase in price. Absolutely amazing ROI for the current owner/seller. If the same trend continues with another 130% increase over two years then the cost would be over $350,000. Astounding. Check back in March 2024 and we’ll see where 968 values are sitting.
Also, apparently this was listed on Hemmings for $75K with no takers before it went on BaT. Great website to sell on, not so good for buyers that just have to have it and get caught up in a bidding war.

Different site, but here's something interesting.

A 1992 E36 M3 with 6-speed manual transmission and a Euro-spec 321HP engine (the one with the individual throttle bodies). So a "real" E36 M3.

Interesting (at least to me) was this Fiberfab Jamaican that popped up on BaT;

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1968- ... an-ii-v-8/

I tried to buy the earlier version of this car (with MGA mechanicals) as my first auto back in the 70's, but my dad vetoed the idea.

Probably saved me a bunch of grief in the long run, but I would have been cool at school for a while I recon

I've officially come to the conclusion that BAT is a great place to sell a car, and a horrible place to buy.........unless you want to overpay for something. I just don't see any bargains there any more.

My example, and please hold the snarky comments  :

I was recently bidding on a ........ready for it..........a 1966 Austin Healey Sprite. Why, in God's name you might ask. My very first sports car was a '67 Sprite. A real POS I bought for $650 (this was many years ago) that today I wouldn't have trusted to drive across town. But I digress........this '66 was nearly identical to mine, was literally almost like new, beautifully restored, rust repaired properly and documented, a few minor easy-to-correct flaws, etc. Brought back great memories and I wanted it.
I was prepared to bid up to $12k, thinking that was all the money in the world. I placed an initial low bid and waited for the last day to go back in. When I checked it, it was waaay over what I was willing to pay. It sold for $19,750 !! + BAT commission......+ shipping if necessary.

A '66 Sprite.......over $20K ! :banghead:

Oh well..........

Same opinion here. And I think there are folks on BAT that simply bid to force the price higher. And in them , the dealers and the flippers and prices get high pretty quickly.

The challenge then becomes to find a site or listing that is a a good buy or at least reasonable. Unfortunately those folks look at BAT prices and adjust theirs accordingly.

There is an 86 911 targa not far from me listed on FaceBook, has a ripped roof, ripped seats, busted window switch and who knows what else wrong with it. Guy didn't even completely uncover it for the photos . I looked on his FB page and his buddy refers to it as his lemon. Guy wants $55K for it. Not sure what he is smoking. I'm be tempted to lowball it and see what he comes back with, but if the easy to fix things are busted, then likely the engine was never really taken care of.

The search continues

Not a BaT find, but thought it very interesting that a 1995 928 GTS sold for $406K at Monterey.

https://www.hagerty.com/media/market-tr ... erey-2022/

Here's the text from the story in the Hagerty link:
Sold for $406,500 (RM Sotheby’s)

#1 condition (Concours) value: $165,000

At the end of the Porsche 928’s long 1977-95 run came the GTS, which is not only the last of the series but also the quickest and most highly-developed. A slow seller when new, the 928 GTS is also rather rare, and according to RM Sotheby’s just 26 US-market cars came with a 5-speed manual like this one (automatics carry a discount of as much as 50 percent in the Hagerty Price Guide).

Naturally, then, RM’s 1,650-mile Midnight Blue Metallic 928 was going to attract some Porsche-loving eyes. Nobody expected this number, however. Not RM Sotheby’s, who put a $225,000 – $275,000 estimate on it. And not us, who value a 928 GTS in #1 condition at $165K in the price guide. The car even caused more of a stir than Beatle George Harrison’s 928 S, which sold for “just” $100,800 the previous day.

It’s also double the previous record for a 928, as long as you ignore the $2M car from Risky Business that sold last year. That wasn’t the only staggering Porsche sale on the peninsula: over at Gooding & Co. a paint-to-sample Caledonia Green 1978 930 brought $478K against a #1 value of $187K.

yes, that 928 GTS sale was eye popping. I don't know what happened in the room, or why it ran up like it did. From what I have read about the car itself, it was very nice, but not something extraordinary. And the thing is, it isn't like one guy had to have it and would pay anything, no matter how crazy, the seller wanted. There were at least 2 people in the room driving that result, and maybe more. Anyway, I'm happy to see it, you know, "all ships rising" sort of thing.

While I've had that thought about some of the BaT prices myself on occasion, this 928 was sold in a traditional auction by Sotheby's at Monterey. The money laundering comment is still valid though - no one seems able to explain the selling price. As Linderpat said though, in any auction you just need to have the right two bidders that really want it.
