I submitted my Alfa to BaT. I won't know for a few days if they accept it for listing. I've read they get 400-500 submissions per month and only accept around 300. So we'll see.

Just noticed this thread today, probably because I spend all my time here in the Diner and Dive Bar. I’ve considered blocking BaT at work because it’s so damned addictive but instead decided to embrace it.

So, I’ve decided to start a BaT weekly pool for about 6 of us at work. Every weekend, one of us will select 5 cars for the upcoming week (a car a day). Prior to Noon on Monday everyone will put in their guesses as to what the high bid will be on each of the cars selected for the week. Doesn’t matter if it sells or not - just the high bid. The car I picked for Monday is the 1970 Jag XKE highlighted above.
As of now, it’s just for fun with no wagering but we’ll see how it goes and take it from there.

I owned a 66 coupe with the 4.2 straight six for a couple of years before the Lucas wiring caught on fire . Rewired the entire car using the schematic and two spools of 14 gauge wire. Was a fun car to drive and own but never again :)

Sold for $126K.

No comment on that as stuff is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay. Whoever go t it will have a blast. It's my kind of car, beautiful without being perfect or authentic enough to be afraid of driving it hard.

I heard back from BAT. Guess I won't be listing the car on BAT, at least not any time soon. They wanted 40-50 more photos in addition to the 25 I submitted. You've seen the listings...........10 different shots of the same fender, 8 shots of the sun visors, 9 different angles of the steering wheel, 6 pictures of the backside of the floor mats, 4 closeups of the wheel weights, etc. LOL. Ridiculous.
I told them it would have to wait until Spring when it comes out of storage.

On the plus side, between the million pics and tons of user commentary, BaT is one of the few places I would consider buying a car sight unseen.

This is one of my favorite Ferrari designs of all time. I know it's more of a GT car, but I really love how it looks.

Maybe. What I see at the angle of that particular photo is a Chevy Monte Carlo at the rear quarter.

The original BMW 850i was also a favorite of mine, so it makes sense if this car looks a little bit similar.

The rear view of this car may be even nicer than the front. Btw, it sold for $51k which sounds like a very good deal. I was quite a bit leery when I saw that the current owner had paid $29k for maintenance last year and only drove the car 300 miles before putting it up for sale again.

You're right. One's blue and the other is silver.

For what it's worth, I think that Chevy is one of the ugliest things on the road. The Ferrari, as with most any Ferrari, is a work of art.

If you review my comment, you will note that the rear quarter - from the angle of the photo - reminded me of the Chevy. That is the only thing that is remotely similar between the two.

If you do list it on BaT come spring, you may as well have cold start and driving videos ready to go, in addition to more photos. Oh, and paint meter readings - BaT bidders get really hung up on paint meter readings.

Seriously, though, as noted above, I think that people can buy with confidence, as every car listed seems to bring out experts on that make and model. And not just big mouth, know-it-all "experts", but real experts that will clearly identify problem areas and provide very valuable comments. As petty as some comments are, there is always a lot of good info mixed in with the BS.

Was very entertaining watching this Ranchero sell yesterday. Most of us in our BaT pool had this pegged at about $40K with one outlier predicting $62K. A bidding war between 2 very determined bidders drove the selling price to $93K. We speculated that the seller was probably snorting coke off a hooker's ass later that evening.

93K Ranchero.jpg

Also thinking that the price for this old rust bucket, that apparently has the original 289 and 4 speed, just went up in price.

Call me crazy but these are climbing my lottery list very quickly......

A muffler shop owner in Pedley where I grew up used to have three of them (red, yellow and blue) parked outside of his shop on Limonite Avenue, just sitting outside on the street. (late 70's, early 80's). I still wonder what became of them.

A lot of the cars on BaT receive comments like " I should have kept my XXX that I sold for $$$ back in..." But in reality, they'd have been further ahead putting their money in the bank or stock market and watching it quadruple (or more) during that time. Dinos are definitely an exception to that, though. Back in the 80s, no one wanted these because they "weren't a real Ferrari". $20K spent back then would get you a nice one that's now worth 10 - 20 times that.

little bit of hyperbole on that one. I wouldn't call it a time capsule, although it is a desirable color. The interior dash recover is a mess, and the engine bay is very disappointing. Needs a full refresh. Plus it has the flat face 15" phone dials, as opposed to the desirable deep dish 16" phone dials. I'd say at the current bid, it is just about there. ($20K)

My '78 is still sort of for sale. It would blow that '80 out of the water. The ONLY 1980 you would want would be the 300hp euro version, not an anemic USA car w/ 3 speed auto.
My car has a '81 euro engine in it. It's quick.

Yeah, that's Doug DeMuro's site that he launched last summer as a competitor to BaT. Cute that he charges 4.5% buyer's fee, capped at $4,500 vs. BaT's 5% fee capped at $5,000. I thought Cars & Bids might have taken off more, given that it's launch was fairly close to the same time that BaT was bought by Hearst. Many enthusiasts were fearing big changes and loss of popularity when BaT got bought but, if anything the opposite is true, and it just seems to keep gathering more hits.

It's cool to see some cars that you remember from your youth show up on BaT, such as John Buffum's TR8, selling tomorrow. I recall it gracing the cover of R&T, along with the Group 44 track car and a stock convertible.

I took the old girl out for a hot lap around the Texas Hill Country the other day... She has got it where it counts! Fired up on the first crank, that old bitch was wanting to go! I took my son with me (he recently got a Mustang GT with a cam, exhaust, shifter, etc.) and even let him drive it. He commented about how much more sure footed it was, and said the brakes "feel like iron." I jabbed, "Of course, it's a 928, one of the best cars ever built!" I showed him heel-toe shifting for the first time. He even washed it for me afterward. What a kiss-ass! :roflmao:

And, yes, he is promised to change out those stupid-colored center headlights.
