It seems like most of the current ones are rather similar and inscrutable in their meanings - without scrolling over them. Then there are plenty that will never be used at all. etc

There are literally hundreds of different packs available. Here is one site that has a easy to browse listing of them:

But I just did a quick browse and didn't think the Unicorn icons would be fitting here.

A little movement from gifs would be nice too. Most on that site seem to have not evolved much since around 2003. I think I've just gotten used to pepe/monkas from Discord servers and the old school rennlist ones. Big gap between those two.

Emotes are mostly dumb, but they do serve some purpose when being used in an all text format. But they don't work if the reader can't tell what they are trying to convey. And then there are failures like - wth is "face with look of triumph"? And how is its intended meaning conveyed by that emote? And stuff like "Kissing face with closed eyes" is just cluttering up the space. It's not going to be used.

Something like is a good emote because its message is obvious. You don't really need 14 "I thought that was funny" emotes.

You're right and the fact is any image can be used. These are just selected because they are standardized but there is tons of flexibility.

Quite a few images here. https://www.frankerfacez.com/emoticons/ Some are from dead memes, but they live on as emotes because people got used to them conveying certain thoughts/ideas/emotions. Would all of these make sense for OpenRoad? Probably not. But some of them might.

At least people have a history of reference points to know what these mean in text communication.

Yup I figured there was a bit of familiarity with these.

And now that I know how to do this then if anyone finds others I can easily add them.

Some more that would be useful here. Let me know if you want something specific and I'll see what I have. Looks like whoever made some of them did a crap job, since some are oversized or a background shows up. They are from many sources. Ah well.

Guys, if you see any that you think you will likely use, right-click on it and save the file. Then insert as an in-line image.

Fernando, how hard would it be to go through our current pile of emojis and dump ones that will almost certainly never be used? It's great to have a good selection, but when there are too many it becomes cumbersome to sift through them to add one to a post.
