Those of you who perused the 2024 Runoffs thread here might remember the P2 car a friend built, that I Crew for.
Since that race last Fall it had been mothballed, but we decided to bring it back out and blow the cobwebs off the car (and the driver ;-) last weekend at our local road racing venue Waterford Hills.
He has held the P2 track record there since 2019 at 1:04.6, but we figured with this still somewhat fresh 'built' motor and low heat cycle leftover tires...how about we take a crack at lowering it?
Good call, as over the course of the weekend we cut a full 2 seconds off (on a tight/twisty 1.5mile track)!
It was so much fun that it looks like we'll have another go at it during the final race weekend of the Season at the end of this Month

We went back to Waterford Hills for the final race weekend of the season, with an eye on lowering the P2 track record even more.
Some of the tires we had left over from the 2024 Runoffs were brand new (but year-old) slicks that had been hand grooved into "Intermediates" (damp track use), so we decided to try them to see how they might do on a clear 80* ambient day.
Sadly, they only allowed us to run pretty consistent 1:05's...so 3 seconds slower than the 8-heat-cycled slicks used previously.
So back to the well worn slicks it was for Sunday, which was another nearly identical perfect weather day.
Halfway through the race we had clipped off a couple laps below our existing record, and just before we were going to start lapping back-markers the giant Monty Python cartoon foot descended from the sky for a stomp!
During deceleration at the fastest part of the track the brakes went 'pop' and the pedal went to the floor
The car went straight off, through the gravel trap and into the dirt berm that separates the track from our campground.
The data showed a decel from 120+ to 60 before a brake line failed, and an impact into the berm at 15mph, so the driver was fine.
The car fared reasonably well too, with the splitter being slightly damaged and a front body mount being snapped off.
WHEW, so now we needed to get the car & driver directly back to Tech to roll over the scales before the new track record could be codified...so we had the wrecker drop the car right there where we completed that task.
So it was mission accomplished for the weekend, and if the car can be rolled back onto the trailer with minimal damage that's a big bonus
