So... I guess this is what happens if you don't use a flare wrench on pipe fittings?

The entire nut is twisted like a helix.

Can someone with more talent for breaking things explain how this happens?

That's the fitting for the high-pressure output of the receiver/dryer. If you "torched" it, you'd melt/burn a bunch of stuff and although there are a ton of "idiot tricks" on this S4, so far, I haven't found anything melted by a torch.

h2pmr wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 3:21 pm none metric sized spanner.
Hmmm.... that's as good a theory as any.

h2pmr wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 3:21 pm but did you get it unscrewed ok?
I did.

Luckily, I have an old H/P A/C hose I can use as a core 'cause that (above-pictured) hose is going in the trash. Maybe I can find replacement fittings.

I do have to take you to task for your picture. You're supposed to post a picture that's 928-related and I can't find a 928 in your picture  :beerchug:

The more disassembly I do on 'the winter car' the more I want to burn down the shop that did most of the work on it in the last 15 years. At this point I'm so used to finding incompetent, sloppy, lazy, or thoughtless work that it doesn't register enough anymore for me to get irate about. But, this shop has done things that just seem like they were screwing things up so as to make extra work the next time they saw it. I have literally never seen such butchery as on this one.

Here's one example: At what point are you doing the client a disservice by not replacing lug nuts? The answer is "two or three removal/install cycles before this:"

Image

Image

9 of 10 lug nuts on the front were like that -^ one.

probably only of use to us guy's on this side of the pond, but the twin filament bulb holder on the rear lamp of an 87+ that can corrode the terminals and fail can be replaced with a Peugeot 108 or Citroen C1 MK2 rear lamp bulb holder.
just need to remove an extra securing lug and it fits and seal like a glove
cheers

That's a great find!

And we do know about the corroded socket problem along with other corrosion problems. But you English would win any contest in that regard :)

Anyone need a 231k-mile ‘89 motor? (Ran reasonably well when removed. Good compression. Had BS R&D Super Clamp.)

Quite possibly. I'm currently down to one GT engine and a few trashed blocks.

I know that car, it belongs to a local P-Burg buddy, and he also has a red 84 928S (among others); he's been to Hershey with us, and that car goes. The color is gorgeous especially with the interior baseball glove brown leather.

Dang. I didn't even know those existed as a part. And I thought I'd touched just about every part on a 928 at this point!

Right now, it's still the property of the client. I'll be seeing him this weekend and one of the goals of that is to dispose this motor. RSN, it either needs to go away or someone needs to be on the hook for me to rebuild it. I have two clients that *should* be interested in it, but I do not have high hopes that either will be takers.

The big metal bits appear to be fine. The throttle plate cable and regulator are obviously only a couple of years old. Everything else (rubber, hoses, senders, harnesses, etc.) needs to go into the garbage. If the motor 'goes away' my intention is to have it ship in 'as is' and 'as shown' condition: all accessories except A/C compressor and hoses, no air box, etc. If one of my clients doesn't want it I'll take more pictures.

Required 928 picture and "... in other news..." : I have a plan for this. What has anyone else done?

All clear side markers installed. All have LED's. If I like how they look, I will need to wire in a resistor for the rears so as to play nice with bulb check.

See what else I started and am now pretty much committed to? After clean up, I will do some variation of the Porken Po'boy rub strip delete by filling the holes with... something.

I am helping, but a buddy of mine that works with aluminum is doing most of the work. He says the Magnesium is a lot easier to work with (softer). He has a ton of tools for the work. But yes, that piece and some work on the two side plenums was all day Saturday.

Hardest stuff to get off is the old top coat that has not flaked off (beige colored). Still tackling that on the side plenums: I stuffed the plenums with paper, 3x Gorilla brand taped each large hole (intakes & balance pipe) and plugged up all remaining holes (one small threaded hole on each side plenum and one tube port on one plenum) and am media blasting it off with some nasty media. Even though everything is taped off, I will still rinse, rinse, rinse, and look inside the plenums with a boroscope.

Well, it didn't clean up very well. Passenger side was worse. Paint staining and layers of paint (probably added when the aftermarket (Jacquemond?) rockers and Jacquemond rear quarters were added?).

So, back on they go (after much cleanup).

(Note: not my tools, but yes my gloves & glasses.)

For a while there I started suspecting a sizable tear between our Universe and a parallel one where 928's never gained in value.... But this is referring to the same exact car. Perhaps its an 86.5 and they rounded up? (Nope! Antenna in the back.)

(P.S. jfk swears he knows nothing about it!)

Hey guys.
My rear driver side seat back has not been working properly, since I bought the car. I had to use a screw driver to activate the mechanism. One side would unlatch, but not the other. I felt around, to find two holes, under the carpet, so I knew the problem had to be there. I pulled back the carpet, to find that one screw had dropped out of the mechanism. I found a suitable size, replaced it, and used a staple gun to re tack the carpet.
Oh, with the previous owner, we installed a Hans shifter last week, and wow, can you say, snick, snick snick?

Hi Dave. Yes, that is the after photo. I only took a few photos. Not one, after we had finished. We installed mine, without removing the torque tube. Quite simply put, it was not easy. Getting to the front bracket, where we had to attach the two nuts, was a bitch...
My balls and sockets were in good shape, but the shifter was vague. Now it is amazing. Kudos to Hans.

Is it my age or just my 928 obsession causing @h2pmr 's avatar to make me think, "Those pod bolts are the worst." ?

Here's my newly restored interior. One cool thing: I stupidly broke my unobtainium defrost vent before reassembly but made a mold of it some time ago. So I had to use my experiment in production, and fortunately it looks and fits pretty well.

Many thanks to Worf for his constant support.
