I can't count how many of those have been found bouncing around loose in cylinder heads. I've never found a solid pin out of place. I'll stick with the solid pins. not as tight of a fit but just can't see going backwards.

There were actually two versions of ‘the rubber’ ones. One version had a solid pin all the way through and one just had the ‘nipple’ sticking out. The latter version is what always falls out.

Don’t ask me which years got which. But I have definitely fondled both types.

Interesting. The plastic gets soft and squishy, and I could easily see it separating from the pin. Perhaps the disc is a bit of defense in depth for the end caps, for leakage. In any case, it's not worth the risk of blockage, so would rather stick with just the pins and skip the plastic disc.

yes i have fished a couple of the rubbers out of the heads in years gone by, but surely in this day and age they can make them out of a better quality rubber that will stand the test of time.

cheers
