Are these springs on backwards? I’m thinking the longer spring, the one they have up front, goes on the adjuster

Right, remember the short spring presses against the adjuster and keeps it from moving around by itself. When you turn it with a screwdriver it snaps against the spring to the next tooth.

now that you have these figured out get a mirror and flashlight and verify the shoe anchor springs are properly fastened
look on the back of the hub carrier for a rib that faces forward,
the spring should hook it. common for these to not be properly hooked,
thus a short while later it sounds like loose parts in the hub
