Harry of Harry’s Garage says the 650S Spider is in the sweet spot of depreciation (
). He argues that the vehicle price has reached a relatively stable value that will not fluctuate much, which is the ideal conditions for a sports car. When a vehicle appreciates too much, you start to feel guilty driving it and when it depreciates to much, it becomes a miserable experience that you are reminded of every time you drive. It got me thinking, should I consider one?

Almost a decade ago (2015), I had the chance to flog a 650S Spider and 675LT at my local track. I was really impressed by them, but at the time I was still all out focused on 997 GT3s. I still have a 997 GT3RS, which has appreciated in value significantly. The Mclaren acceleration and braking would put my Porsches to shame. The handling was superb, though the vehicle felt long, you could really feel the length when navigating tighter turns. The steering was telepathic, slightly better than 997 GT-car hydraulic steering. A few concerns with them at the time were build quality and whether or not the company would remain solvent. I am reading that build quality has continued to improve with Mclaren’s, but that doesn’t impact these 650 models. However, is it reasonable to believe that prior owners have worked out all of the build issues by now? I can see service records and get an idea if it was problem vehicle from the beginning. I think parts availability is still a challenge and parts costs are high. These vehicles have to have the accumulators replaced on the regular, which isn’t cheap.

I considered the 600LT before buying my 991.2 RS and stayed away yet again due to depreciation, build quality and solvency concerns.

Times have changed and looking at an already depreciated 650s, I’m wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on these. Anyone have one in their garage?

Friends have a 2019 570S they bought new, and overall very much like the car.
They are not Track people, but do plenty of road trips.
The one downside to the McLaren they report is that the seats aren't comfortable enough for long stints, if that's important to you.
