580 mile round trip today to see a 90 S4 that looked like it needed saving.
got there and it was the same car pictured in the ad but just not recent pictures..
its heart stopped a while ago, " its just the crank sensor, but cannot get it out " is what i was told, it could be but i am sure there will be more to it than that.
pictures below from the ad, it did still have the build sticker on the tailgate floor, so will be interested to see if it came with only the rear half of the interior in can can red.
no sunroof from the factory, but some ffing previous owner thought it a good idea to fit a glass one
anyway a deal was struck, and i collect it next Sunday
when you get past a certain age, and as long as its legal, its better to regret doing something than regret not doing it.
will no doubt regret it but its only money....

thanks, like to think it is a CS and its just the impression left when someone had removed the sticker years ago, but its going to be way more POS than CS, but will be interesting finding out how much of a POS it is

It’s a reflection of “S” and yaw’ll know that the 928 designers worked very hard to make surfaces that would make that S reflection, right?

picked it up on Sunday and is now back at my work, have not had a chance to put it on a lift to see what its like and to check the crank end float, but under bonnet is all present and correct, so ideal for breaking.

sunroof still brings a tear to my eye, just who would do such a thing
but the drivers sports seat bolster pictured -RHD- is in amazing condition for a 90 model with 190k miles on it

am in the usual process of removing the last 30yrs worth of ICE and alarm / immobilizer wiring, 1 mile down just another 1/2 mile of it to go, get it all back to standard and then see what works and what does not, as there was no battery fitted when i bought it and i have not fitted one yet, will have fire extinguisher at the ready...
and looking under the bonnet a lot more time had gone into fitting large speakers, sub etc than anything mechanical

While the sunroof mod isn't ideal, it does not look like a shade tree hack (at least from the pictures). What's your plan for it? Put in stock sun roof or weld it all closed?

sunroof was a fairly good one back in the day, but having no drain tubes to remove the water, the rubber degrades and it leaks onto the headliner and warps it badly.
70% i am going to break it
10% if i can get it running may drain the water out of the block and dry store it for a few years then see
10% if i can get it running and driving, polish it and sell it
10% undecided

just put it on a 2 post lift at work to finally look underneath it, like most 928's this side of the pond, its a little rusty....
BUT checked crank end float and its .21mm so far so good
next job is to remove crank sensor and fit a new one, put some fuel in it and see what happens.
have fire extinguisher at the ready, as don't want a repeat of the orange one.

picture of the crank sensor is what greeted me.
the only 2 crank sensors i have fitted have been manuals, so not just a case of clutch and flywheel removal on an auto, but did manage to get it out without fully removing the flywheel, by gently tapping it down and squeezed past the flywheel.

so new crank sensor in and all back together
fitted a known good fuel pump and put a couple of gallons of fresh fuel in
fitted a known good LH ecu
cranks over fine but no start, fuel pump not working at all
on a 90 model, should the fuel pump run as soon as the ignition is switched on and for how long?
need to read W/Shop manual and a wiring diagram, but just being lazy - again

and a few rusty pictures, so you guy's in sunny climes know what it looks like

jumpered the fuel pump relay and sure enough the fuel pump worked and after 3 seconds, sure enough the rusty fuel pipe started leaking

copper fuel pipe fitted this morning, just went straight from join in engine bay to join at the flexible pipe coming from the fuel filter, not pretty but just to get it running.
jumpered the fuel pump and no leaks

cranked for about 10 seconds, none start, another 10 seconds still none start.
check the easy things first, remove a plug, its bone dry, put it in the end of the plug lead and see if getting a spark, no spark out with a wiring diagram, no 12v at EZK, fit a known good relay, no 12v at LH ecu, fit a known good relay, tighten up all earth points, .
tried again and fired into life

next job engine removal and then start to strip the rest of the car.

uneventful engine removal, and started to strip the rest of the car, leaving it so it can be pushed around the workshop, and leave it in a spare bay so can start to strip the interior, then might sell it as a rolling shell.
just removed one lower sill cover and the sill is original and rust free.
+ random pictures of a RHD version and much easier to get at the PSD slave cylinder with the fuel tank removed

anybody this side of the pond want anything off it, just let me know.

sadly i am not, its driven its last mile.
this summer will mark 17 years with 3 x restored 928's and 3x broken for spares, so should make me all square with the 928 gods, i hope.

rear interior strip down, and nice to see the original chalk marks on the can can red for possible cut out for rear shock mount, but the fitter decided against it, same on both sides, i say chalk, but the small piece i tried to rub off, did not
and even a chalk mark for where to put the small piece of can can behind the rear seat belt reel.

they look like pearl white with red stitching.
but when removed and looking at the back of them, they look possibly like they have been redone by someone.

has anybody seen an optioned car with staples holding the leather on and that the stitching does not go right through?

i have some standard ones and they are just glued on the rear and the stitching goes right through the hardboard to the other side

finally got the old girl striped down and removed all the parts i want, just gearbox and torque tube to remove.
selling the rest as a rolling shell, as am fast running out of space to store anymore parts and don't want to take up a spare bay at work for longer than necessary.

random 928 trivia, although i might be wrong : only 9mm spanner sized nut on the inside of a 928 holds the resistor 92851207002 in place

strange place to put a resistor , on a RHD car anyway as its very close to the sound deadening foam on the bulkhead.

just removed the gearbox and torque tube.
with the diff held with a chain around the ARB and a transmission jack under each track control arm, the suspension was gently lowered as 1 unit approx 8"
brake wiring loom just unclipped from its securing mounts, no brake pipe was removed, just removed the fork, cut the body mounting point and bent it so the metal brake pipe could squeeze through.

then transmission jack under the diff, remove chain and whole gearbox / torque tube can be removed, takes 3 people and its a bit of a squeeze but very doable.

never seen a complete, intact foam surround for the gear lever, all have fallen apart to some degree when touched.
the deformed looking part is just folded over.
now fully striped as far as i want to take it, and now on ebay as a rolling shell, still has all steering suspension and brakes
if it was not for that ffing sunroof, and i had been 20yrs younger i might have saved it but hopefully it will go and save a few more 928's from the same fate.

rolling shell now sold and am delivering it to the other end of the UK this weekend to someone who needs the drivers side front chassis leg and inner wing.
so at least it is going to save another 928 from the scrap yard.
after that just need to clean, sort and sell the rest of it, should keep me busy

had a rethink and on the slim chance anybody on this forum needs anything from this 90S4 auto, and cannot find it in their country, i will post direct to members, who have posted at least 10 posts on any 928 threads
