Addition to my unloved Porsche model collection after talking about it for a long time.

It's not exactly what I wanted, but it seemed clean and unmolested considering the age and miles.

Tentative plan is to pickup the car in person on the 23rd or the 24th in upstate NY.

Congrats and welcome to 996 world!

Been a member since 2009 and my cabrio has close to 200k miles now. Keep up on maintenance and it'll treat you to a lot of fun miles.

Let me know if you ever have any specific questions since I've been around them for a long time.

I'll have a 2000 mile shakedown run on it.

Anything outside of the ordinary to look for or inspect with minimal tools before the drive?

Sorry life got in the way and I didn't respond sooner.

But as @amdavid mentioned, take a look at the oil if possible and make sure there's no metal or plastic in it. Metal is worse, but plastic can also blow things up too if it means the pads on the chain rails are close to being finished.

Other than that here is what I look for:

- Oil puff when starting up: could be harmless as these cars do that at times but it could also be the AOS which is a simple device to replace and relatively inexpensive but either requires the engine to be slightly dropped or for your arms to hinge in 4 places to get to it

- Check the coolant tank and water pump: Again both easy to replace but they cause a mess and will leave you stranded if they go bad

- Oil leaks: Most are harmless but if you want a clean driveway it could be the RMS which requires dropping the transmission

- Engine mounts: see if the exhaust pipes are in alignment with each other. If one is lower than the other it probably means an engine mount is going bad. Aside from not handling properly and getting more noise/vibration it could also make it harder for you to shift if these need replacing

- Ignition switch: if it's sticky and hard to turn then it might need replacing, not that bad of a job and not too expensive but could keep you from starting the car at the worst time

- window regulators: see if they're clicking or sticking as these go bad a lot, also see if the window lowers when you open the door or it'll get caught on the upper window rubber and stress the window if not. Both require the regulator to be changed, not the most fun job but not awful

- Check the AC vent to see if foam is flying out. Generally is and that means in time the car won't send heat properly, the fix is pretty painful but this is more of an annoyance than anything critical

- Sticky buttons: the radio and some other buttons get sticky, you can work around or live with it

- Radiator inlets on bumper: check for leaves, a lot of crap gets collected there, try to clear it out if you see anything in there. To really clean requires removing the bumper, not a big deal but something you do when you get home.

- Finally once you get home don't let the car sit for over a week with the alarm on, it will kill the battery. If you want it to sit for an extended period of time use a battery tender or leave it unlocked and it'll be fine

Have fun and let us know how the drive went!

Thanks for the information.

Right now the plan is to pick up the car on the morning of the 23rd.

I had bought the Continental classic style Bluetooth radio head unit for the 928, but I might swap it into this car instead. Then I'll try and get the 80s style blaupunkt for the 928.

Never and I repeat never willingly deal with the NY State DMV.

I'm going to have words with my county tax office when I get back home, that could have easily been avoided if not for them.

Day #2 Update

Car drives straight, suspension feels good surprisingly.

No smoke on start up. Window regulators are working as they're supposed to. The foam from the heater core area is done and blowing everywhere.

See the ad behind the car:

So glad to read the trip is going well!

And you stopped by my old home town of Niagara Falls too!

I've done many road trips in my 996 cabrio and it'll eat up the miles no problem. Keep us posted but it sounds like you found a good one!

The speedometer on the 996 is off by 5mph and that's sort of annoying. The ~16 gallon fuel tank is a bit small, but I guess it isn't a GT car. It has an annoying whine @ exactly 2000rpm in 5th. So far those are the only complaints. Otherwise it seems to be better than I was expecting.

I was worried the car would feel slow, but it doesn't. I wasn't really able to run it through the RPMs until I was in PA.

Tomorrow West Virginia & New River Gorge National Park.

I crossed WV using almost no highway or interstate so far impressed with the 996. It did well.

Tomorrow I try to avoid the overachiever police in VA and set up for NC tomorrow.

I think Smokey’s GT event was there this past weekend. Did you encounter long lines of Porsche GT cars?

How was the dragon?
A few cars, few bikes, not that busy. No one interrupted my trip through.

This is the second time I've been up the dragon, last time was in the 928. The 996 handled it better, by a lot, but it has much better tires than the 928 back then.

I'll try and find some old pictures next time I'm at the house.

Just that one group I posted the picture of on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Beyond that I saw an orange GT3 leading a group of BMW & BMW Supras which I thought was a bit comical.

Looking at the dragon photos website, the same GT3 from the blue ridge parkway was on the dragon right before me. Either that or one spec'd exactly the same.

There were several events this weekend at both the Dragon and towns in the mountains as my Facebook feed was filled with photos from my friends.

I haven't been to the Dragon in years but have the memories, photos, and even the t-shirt from the times I took my 996 cabrio there. :bigok:

Car is "home" for the next two weeks while I work.

Just checked the oil after ~2500 miles. No noticable usage.

Is this really a 155,000 mile engine? :order:

For all of the negative press there are M96 engines with high miles out there. My Cabrio is closing in on 200k. If you're on Facebook there's a group of high-milers found here:

On a turbo no less. Nice.

~

Current short term plans for my 996:

1.) Fix the yellowing headlights.
2.) GT3 center console delete
3.) Radio head unit, going to replace with the Bluetooth continental I have in a box
4.) Full service brakes/oil/coils & plugs/ect
5.) Frunk struts, I got bonked in the head today

The passenger seat leather has shrunk & shriveled. I'm not sure what to do with that yet. The tail lights have a couple cracks each. Neither of those are that high on my list of concerns though.

#5 will cost you less than lunch so that's an easy one to knock out almost ASAP. And yes I've had both my 996 and Cayman try to decapitate me.

Upon further research I'm going to have to drop the transmission sooner than expected, the pinion bearing is making noise. It's not bad yet, but soon enough I imagine it will be.

Anyone have a G96 for sale. :hiding:

The yellow headlights were killing me, that was first on the agenda.
PXL_20260515_154433768.jpg
Faceplate was missing on the original radio and I wanted Bluetooth. It doesn't quite fit in visually as well as I'd hoped, but I already had it and it works.
PXL_20260517_205245825.MP.jpg

Still going to do the GT3 delete, I don't think I'll miss the cassette storage.

I want to get a hardwired USB adapter to replace the cigarette lighter.

I got rid of my cassette holder and put in a cubby so I have a place to put my crap. I also have a cd holder in there as I still have a CD player in the car and enjoy using the old school format for a more time-period experience!
